When Gladstone Hospital’s new $42 million Emergency Department is completed in April/May 2020, a million-dollar contract will be awarded for the redevelopment of the existing emergency department into a bigger and better Specialist Outpatient Department.

The redeveloped Specialist Outpatient Department will complement the unprecedented growth and investment in staffing, infrastructure and service delivery. You can read more about the great staff and great services.

Specialist outpatient services are conducted to assess and manage conditions which require specialist opinion such as:

  • investigation and diagnosis of conditions not able to be provided by the referring practitioner
  • advice and/or provision of treatment and management of complex healthcare conditions.

Detailed design work of the new specialist outpatient area will being in November this year and we invite you to have your say on what services you believe should be delivered.

Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service has a very clear vision of the vital role Gladstone Hospital will play in the future delivery of health services to the Gladstone community and Central Queensland.

The growth of the type and volume of healthcare delivered from Gladstone Hospital is essential to ensure facilities across Central Queensland – Biloela, Rockhampton and Emerald – can provide the best possible services within a defined budget.

Heath service growth must be safe and sustainable. Many factors impact safety and sustainability including:

  • The number of patients requiring treatment as it may impact the ability for a clinician to maintain the required skill level

If there is not sufficient demand locally, appointments can be scheduled sooner at another facility

  • Ability to recruit specialist medical staff with the appropriate skill levels to Gladstone
  • Ability to provide locum medical coverage is permanent medical staff resign

We will use your opinions and suggestions to plan future outpatient services delivery.
